Clichy confounds rumourmongers with Arsenal deal
20/06/2008
Gael Clichy has signed a new contract on the same day he was linked with a move away from Arsenal in the gossip columns.
The 22-year-old Frenchman has signed a new "long-term" deal, a statement on the Arsenal website said.
Earlier on Friday wide-of-the-mark reports had suggested Serie A's Roma and Juventus were circling for the left-back.
But the Arsenal statement continued: "Everyone at the club is looking forward to Gael's continued contribution in the forthcoming years."
Clichy has established himself as a key part of Arsene Wenger's team following Ashley Cole's transfer to Chelsea in 2006.
Last season the left-back, signed from AS Cannes in August 2003, turned out in 49 of Arsenal's 58 matches more than any other player.
He was also voted into the PFA team of the year and holds the record for being the youngest winner of a Premier League medal following Arsenal's title triumph in 2004.
