Criticism inspires Spain to victory

27/06/2008

Spanish coach Luis Aragones has claimed that criticism levelled at himself and his team helped inspire them to victory over Russia in the semi-finals of Euro 2008 last night.

Spain breezed past Russia in Vienna, eventually coming out 3-0 victors thanks to goals from Xavi, Daniel Guiza and David Silva.

"The criticism has taught me a lot, except when I am insulted. It has stimulated me and encouraged me to do things better," Aragones said afterwards.

"When we came to the tournament we realised we had a good team and we could get far.

"We had some hard moments but we have always believed in ourselves. We have a great team.''

Spain will now take on Germany in the final of Euro 2008 on Sunday. It is the first time Spain has been in the final of a major tournament since 1984.

Aragones, 69, has announced he will step down as the Spanish manager at the end of the tournament and reports suggest he will take over as manager of Turkish club Fenerbahce next season.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18659129-ADNFCR
