Croatia fined for fans' racist behaviour in defeat to Turkey

29/06/2008

Croatia's football federation has been hit with a £10,000 fine over some of their fans' racist behaviour in their Euro 2008 defeat to Turkey.

Uefa said Croatian fans were guilty of displaying racist banners and behaving offensively during the quarter-final in Vienna.

Croatia have been fined nearly 12,500 euros and have three days after they receive the reasons for the decision to lodge an appeal.

Some supports displayed Nazi-style banners and shouted racist chants at the Turkey players, according to reports.

Slaven Bilic's side were beaten 3-1 on penalties by Turkey at the Ernst Happel Stadium on June 20th.

Croatia had been leading in extra time through Ivan Klasnic but Semih Senturk equalised with the last kick of the game.

In the shootout, Ivan Rakitic, Tottenham's Luka Modric, and Mladen Petric missed their spot-kicks to send them out of the tournament.

Croatian fans were accused of making money noises and displaying racist banners in Euro 2004 in their game with France.

The Croatian football federation apologised for the fans' behaviour but Uefa did not fine them.

Croatia and Fabio Capello's England are in Group six for the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign, which starts in September.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18660553-ADNFCR
