Defender Brown agrees new contract with Man United

21/04/2008

Wes Brown has agreed a new four-year contract with Manchester United.

The England defender, whose previous deal expired at the end of the season, has penned a deal until 2012.

Brown looked set to exit Old Trafford after a stand-off between his agent and United over his salary increase.

But despite being linked with Newcastle United, the 28-year-old has decided to stay at the club which signed him as a trainee in 1996.

"Manchester United is a fantastic club and I am delighted to have signed a new deal," Brown said.

"To be part of a team I have supported all my life is a great honour. I can see this team winning many trophies in the coming seasons and it will be great to share in that success."

Despite the row over wages behind-the-scenes, Brown has made the most appearances this season in his United career.

Brown has played 47 games, mostly at right-back, because of Gary Neville's injury layoff.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson praised Brown's displays in deputising for skipper Neville.

"I am delighted Wes has signed a new contract, he has grown up at this club and is an integral part of the squad," Ferguson said.

"He has done a great job during Gary's absence and has been a major factor in our outstanding defensive performance."

The defender, who has 15 international caps, has started both friendly games under England boss Fabio Capello.
