Derby and QPR get lucky escape
12/08/2008
The early season pressure on Iain Dowie and Paul Jewell was eased as QPR and Derby came from behind to beat lower division opponents in the Carling Cup.
QPR came from behind twice at League One side Swindon, but came back to win 3-2. Goals from Angelo Balanta, Dexter Blackstock and Damian Delaney were enough to spare Dowie's blushes and give the under-fire boss some breathing space.
Derby boss Jewell had striker Nathan Ellington to thank for the easing the pressure on his beleaguered side. Ellington scored a hat-trick as Derby came from behind to beat League Two side Lincoln City 3-1 after extra-time at Pride Park.
Charlton were booed off at The Valley as they lost 1-0 to League One side Yeovil. Striker Paul Warne scored the winner for the visitors.
Noel Hunt scored a late winner for Reading as they overcome League Two side Dagenham and Redbridge 2-1.
Wolves needed extra-time to beat another League Two side Accrington Stanley 3-2 at Molineux, while Crewe beat Championship side Burnley 2-0 at Gresty Road.
Luton put their difficulties behind them to beat last seasons FA Cup semi-finalist Barnsley 2-0 at Kenilworth Road.
The performance of the night came from Gary McAllister's Leeds United, who were 5-1 up away at Chester within 35 minutes, with Darren Beckford scoring a hat-trick. Leeds eventually emerged 5-2 winners.
