Donadoni facing uncertain future after Euro 2008 exit
23/06/2008
Roberto Donadoni has admitted his future as Italy coach is not up to him following his side's Euro 2008 penalty shootout defeat to Spain.
Iker Casillas saved the spot-kicks of Daniele de Rossi and Antonio di Natale before Cesc Fabregas scored the decisive goal from 12-yards to give the Spaniards a 4-2 win on penalties after a drab and goalless 120 minutes of football.
Italy's style frustrated the Spanish, as well as several pundits who believed Donadoni's side had been playing for penalties from early in the game.
But the manager claimed his side "did everything [they] were capable of" to win the game, adding: "I think the players should leave here with their heads held high.
"They gave everything they had. We've simply got to live with this."
Donadoni has hinted he believes a new man could be brought in to take charge of the national team, however.
"Tomorrow is the start of a new era," he said.
"I was satisfied with our run [but my future] is not up to me. I live day by day and what I experienced at this tournament was positive. Everything we did was for the good of the team."
