Drogba "sorry" for coin throw
14/11/2008
Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has issued an apology after throwing a coin at the Burnley supporters during last night's Carling Cup defeat.
As the Ivorian international celebrated the Blues' opening goal at Stamford Bridge in front of the travelling fans, a few coins and other objects appeared to be thrown from the crowd at his feet.
Television pictures showed Drogba gesture to the fans before picking up one of the objects and hurling it back into the stand.
"This is something I want to make clear. I tried to celebrate the goal and I received some things at me," Drogba said in a statement.
"The big mistake I did was to throw it back so if someone was hurt I just want to apologise for it.
"This is not something I should show in a football match and I want to apologise.
"It was an incident in the heat of the moment and I regret it. It was just a mistake and nothing more."
Chelsea went on to lose the match to the Championship side in a penalty shootout, with Wayne Bridge and John Obi Mikel seeing their kicks saved by Burnley goalkeeper Brian Jensen.
Drogba could face disciplinary action over the incident, which is currently being investigated by the Football Association.
And in a worst-case scenario the 29-year-old may also face criminal prosecution after the Metropolitan police announced they are launching a seperate probe.
