Ebdon books quarter final spot after scrappy win

26/04/2008

Former champion Peter Ebdon has made it through to the final eight of the World Championship after beating Mark King 13-9 in a cagey match.

Ebdon gained an early advantage in the final session of the tie, taking an 11-6 lead through two consecutive breaks of 79.

While King fought back to take frames number 18 and 19, the 2002 champion showed sufficient resolve and took frame 22 to secure a quarter final spot.

However, Ebdon will have to up his game if he is to reach his fourth final in the competition, and he has admitted that he wasn't at his best against King.

"It was a tactical affair, scrappy and we both got bogged down a bit," he said after his victory.

"I felt very comfortable with myself out there and I'd like to think that whatever Mark threw at me tonight I would have been equal to."

Ebdon will face either Shaun Murphy or Ali Carter in the next round, both of whom he is confident of beating given his tough training regime.

At the same time, world champion John Higgins has yet to book his place in the final eight, with his match against Ryan Day currently tied at eight frames each.

Higgins had taken a 6-3 lead in the game, but Day fought back to draw level, while Carter and Murphy are also tied in their match.
