Everton seal Uefa Cup spot after double from Yakubu

11/05/2008

Everton have clinched the Uefa Cup spot after beating Newcastle United 3-1 at Goodison Park.

Yakubu gave the Toffees the lead which was cancelled out by Michael Owen's penalty.

Joleon Lescott scored his tenth goal of the season to put David Moyes' side ahead with Yakubu's spot-kick sealing victory.

Aston Villa will have to settle for an Intertoto Cup place after drawing 2-2 with West Ham United at Upton Park.

Villa, who were hoping that Everton would stumble against the Magpies, trailed through Nolberto's Solano's goal.

Ashley Young equalised while Gareth Barry gave Villa the lead, in what could be his last game for the club.

But Dean Ashton netted two minutes from time to leave Villa in sixth place in the table.

Elsewhere, Sven Goran Eriksson's reign as Manchester City boss looks to have ended with an 8-1 drubbing by Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium.

Richard Dunne was sent-off on 15 minutes for hauling down Tuncay, with Stewart Downing slotting home the penalty.

Alfonso Alves grabbed a hat-trick while Downing grabbed his second, with Fabio Rochemback and Jeremie Aliadiere completing the rout.

Elano netted City's consolation but they will play in the Intertoto Cup next season via the Fair Play league.

Elsewhere, Arsenal finish third after a 1-0 win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light with Theo Walcott grabbing the winner.

Liverpool ended their season with a 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur through second-half goals from Andriy Voronin and Fernando Torres at White Hart Lane. ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18588040-ADNFCR
