Ferdinand signs new five-year United deal
15/05/2008
Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand has signed a new five-year contract to keep him at the club until at least 2013.
The 29-year-old, who recently captained his country for the first time, has been an integral part of United's Premier League-winning team this season alongside central-defensive partner Nemanja Vidic.
London-born Ferdinand signed from Leeds United in 2002 for an estimated £30 million - a world record fee for a defender.
And he has developed into one of the top centre-backs in the country, winning 65 England caps since making his debut back in 1997.
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said he is "delighted" Ferdinand has committed his future to the club.
"Rio's contribution this season has been a major factor in our outstanding defensive performance," he explained.
"Rio has matured into his role at the club and has shown, when needed, what a great captain and leader he can be."
Ferdinand, who will be 34 by the time his contract expires, hinted at his desire to see out his professional career at Old Trafford.
"Manchester United is a fantastic club and I am delighted I have signed a new contract," he said.
"It is a great honour to be part of this trophy-winning team and to share in the success, which I am sure will continue for many seasons to come.
"I would like to thank the manager, the coaching staff, the players and the fans for the tremendous support they have given me since I joined the club."
Ferdinand is currently preparing for United's last game of the season next Wednesday's Champions League final against Premier League rivals Chelsea at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.
