Fergie praises United "patience"

12/11/2008

Sir Alex Ferguson has hailed the patient play of his much-changed Manchester United side in their nervy 1-0 win over Queens Park Rangers in the Carling Cup.

The Premier League and European champions had to rely on a late penalty from substitute Carlos Tevez to sneak past the managerless Championship outfit at Old Trafford.

But Ferguson said he was pleased overall with the effort from his side, who struggled to break down the Londoners' solid defence.

"The conditions made things a bit difficult in terms of the ball coming off the surface quickly, but I think we controlled that part well," the manager told the club's own television channel, MUTV.

"We played with good patience and good speed and stretched them really well."

Coming off the back of Saturday's 2-0 league reverse against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, Ferguson said a decent, winning performance was vital.

However, he expressed some slight concern over his side's inability to convert their dominance into goals of late.

"We created a lot, but at this moment they're just not going in for us. It'll come," he continued.

"QPR haven't lost a lot of goals recently and they defended very well as we expected. So it was always going to be tough.

"But overall I'm very pleased by the attitude of the players, they worked very hard and we're all delighted to get through."ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18871177-ADNFCR
