Fergie scraps retirement plans
30/11/2008
Sir Alex Ferguson has scraped plans to retire at the end of next season.
The Manchester United boss was expected to call time on his glittering career at the end of the 2009/10 season, having started at Old Trafford in 1986.
Ferguson's side won the Premier League and Champions League last season, his second European Cup triumph.
The 66-year-old said he has stopped setting a date to walk away from the game.
"I don't ever think about it any more - it's all out of my mind. It doesn't even come into it now. I don't even think about it," the Scot told the News of the World.
"I am not even going to put myself into that situation where I am thinking: 'Should I this year, should I next year?'
"If my health deteriorated, that solves the problem for everyone. You would be rid of me for good.
"Secondly, it's about my team. If they are doing well, then there's no pressure on me."
Ferguson famously said he would step down at the end of the 2001/02 season before changing his mind. He later admitted the announcement affected his United players, who finished third that season having won three league titles on the trot.
He has won a record ten Premier League titles since the competition started in 1993.
