Ferguson tells current side to make their own history

Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has told his current side to make their own history in the Nou Camp when they face Barcelona tomorrow.

United take on Barca in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final on the same ground where they lifted the trophy in dramatic circumstances against Bayern Munich in 1999.

Although some players still remain in the United side from that victorious night Ferguson says it is important they do not dwell on the past and try and write a new chapter in the club's history.

The Scot admits it could help the younger players realise the significance of the game but insists they must focus on their dangerous opponents.

He said: "I don't know what the older players, the ones who were here that night, have said to the younger players. That victory is not lost on anyone – it's shown that many times on television or on videos.

"Even more important is what this team can achieve themselves, making their own history. They are good enough to do that. This team is for today. They don't need to be reminded of the past or be worried about it."

Ferguson claimed the winner of the clash between United and Barca would have a "great chance" of winning the competition against either Liverpool or Chelsea.

Goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has been included in the squad to face Barca having missed the 1-1 draw with Blackburn with a groin strain.

Gary Neville, Wayne Rooney, Owen Hargreaves and Anderson have also recovered from minor injuries and should play some part tomorrow.
