Fresh delays for Liverpool's new stadium
29/08/2008
Liverpool have announced that plans for their new stadium in Stanley Park have been delayed once more.
The downturn in global market conditions has been blamed for the setback.
In a statement published today, the club said: "Our commitment to building a new world class LFC stadium is undiminished.
"Like many other major development projects in the UK and overseas we are affected by global market conditions and as such work on the project will be delayed in the short term.
"We will use this period productively and progress the proposals for the stadium to increase its capacity to 73,000 seats."
The delay is not unexpected with reports suggesting that the club's American's co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett are struggling to find the money for the next stage in the £350 million stadium's development.
Liverpool's plans to move from Anfield to the new site were formally agreed by the city council in May.
The stadium was expected to be completed by August 2011 but that date now looks in doubt.
