Gerrard fit for Chelsea clash
24/10/2008
Captain Steven Gerrard has been passed fit for Liverpool's top-of-the-table clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
The midfielder was substituted on the hour mark in the Reds' Champions League draw at Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night, leaving many fans fearing for the England international's fitness ahead of this weekend's showdown in London.
However, manager Rafael Benitez confirmed today that Gerrard has come through a training session at the club's Melwood complex this morning and will be fit to start against the Blues.
Fellow injury concern Xabi Alonso has also been cleared for the encounter with Luiz Felipe Scolari's men, who lead Liverpool on goal difference at the top of the Premier League.
He also came off against Atletico, as did the Reds' goalscorer Robbie Keane - who faces a late fitness test to determine if he will play.
However, despite the good news over Gerrard and Alonso, it was confirmed that, as expected, star striker Fernando Torres will not be back in time to play against Chelsea.
The Spaniard injured a hamstring on international duty last week, although he may make a return to the Liverpool team against Portsmouth at Anfield next Wednesday.
