Hammers sign Uruguay international on free transfer

05/09/2008

Managerless West Ham United have signed Uruguay international Walter Lopez on a free transfer.

The left-back joins the Hammers after leaving Argentine giants River Plate this summer.

Because he was a free agent, he was able to join the east London club
outside the transfer window.

The move comes just two days after Alan Curbishley quit as West Ham boss after claiming he had a lack of control of transfers.

Lopez, who can play in defence and midfield, said he is a huge fan of the Premier League.

"I am really happy to be here and I hope to have a good career," the 22-year-old told the club's official website.

"Upton Park is a beautiful stadium and it will be great to play for West Ham. I am looking forward to it.

"It is a great club and there are some great players at the club. I know about many of them like Lucas Neill and Craig Bellamy. Everyone here has made me feel very welcome."

West Ham's caretaker manager Kevin Keen said: "Walter is a very attacking full-back who can get forward.”

Lopez, who has three caps for Uruguay, is expected to make his debut in the Hammers' clash away to West Bromwich Albion on September 13th.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18767829-ADNFCR
