Hendry joins Carter in World Championship semis

30/04/2008

Seven-time winner Stephen Hendry has beaten Ryan Day 13-7 to seal his place in the World Snooker Championship semi-finals.

The Scot, whose last title came in 1999, had led 11-5 overnight after a superb display of controlled snooker in the evening session on Tuesday.

And he came out of the blocks quickest in the first frame of the afternoon session on Wednesday, sealing an 84-38 win to move within one frame of victory.

He looked to be on course to wrap things up quickly, but Welshman Day earned a stay of execution by fighting back from the brink to move to within five frames at 12-7.

But Hendry's experience in such a situation - it was his record-breaking 17th Crucible quarter-final – shone through and he completed the win when Day went in-off attempting a snooker at 0-69 down.

Elsewhere, Essex-born Ali Carter secured a berth in the semi-finals of the tournament with a 13-9 victory over 2002 world champion Peter Ebdon.

Carter made Crucible history yesterday when he recorded the second maximum break of the tournament following Ronnie O'Sullivan's 147 the previous day.

And the 28-year-old, who held a 9-7 overnight lead, completed his quarter-final win over Ebdon by taking four of the six frames played in the morning session today - setting up a semi-final meeting with Stephen Maguire or Joe Perry.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18574962-ADNFCR
