Hull City pile on misery for hapless Tottenham

05/10/2008

Juande Ramos' days at Tottenham Hotspur look numbered after a 1-0 loss to Hull City at White Hart Lane.

Spurs have made their worst start to the season in 90 years after a sensational free-kick from Geovanni on nine minutes, to leave the north London club rock-bottom while Hull climb to third spot.

Hull City dominated a nervy Spurs side in the opening minutes with Geovanni firing a shot over from four yards. And a week after scoring a sensational strike against Arsenal, the Brazilian repeated the trick with a 30-yard free-kick that flew into the top corner past Heurelho Gomes.

Spurs created little in the first-half and Roman Pavlyuchenko was substituted on the half-hour mark with a suspected injury and was replaced by Darren Bent.

Phil Brown's men continued to dominate with Dean Marney crashing a shot from the edge of the box onto the crossbar while Gomes stopped Marlon King's low strike.

Spurs' best chance of the half fell to defender Jonathan Woodgate, whose shot hit Michael Turner and rattled the post on the stroke of half-time.

Boosted by the introduction of David Bentley at the break, the home side wrestled control of the game with Bent stroking a shot wide when sent through on goal.

Striker Bent was then denied by a fabulous block by Turner while Didier Zokora lashed a shot inches over from 22 yards.

Spurs were unlucky not to equalize when Luke Modric's shot into the ground bounced over the bar while Frazier Campbell felt he should have had a penalty when he was tripped by George Boateng.

In the dying minutes Gareth Bale summed up Spurs' afternoon with his free-kick from 30 yards sailed inches wide as Hull clung on to continue their fairytale start to the season.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18811373-ADNFCR
