Jewell denies links with Blackburn Rovers job

03/06/2008

Paul Jewell has quashed reports linking him with the manager's job at Blackburn Rovers should Mark Hughes take over at Manchester City.

After Sven-Goran Eriksson was sacked by City owner Thaksin Shinawatra, Hughes has emerged as the clear favourite to take over at Eastlands, with Blackburn today confirming they have reached an agreement with the Manchester club over compensation terms for the Welshman.

And with Hughes given permission to speak to City regarding a possible move, Jewell's name had been linked with taking the reins at Ewood Park.

However, the Derby County boss has moved to stress his desire to stay at Pride Park, despite the club's relegation from the top flight with a record low points total.

"My name has been bandied about and I wanted to move as quickly as possible to commit to Derby County," he told the club's website.

"This is a huge club and I have a massive job to do. Although I can't stress enough that it is only media speculation, I think it is important to make my intentions clear so there are no distractions," he added.

"We are having a fantastic summer in the transfer market with six new signings and many more in the pipeline. My only focus is Derby."

Jewell has made six signings this summer, with the free capture of Kris Commons following the arrivals of Paul Connolly, Ruben Zadkovich, Nathan Ellington, Jordan Stewart and Paul Green.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18622262-ADNFCR
