Keane announces first stage of summer clearout

Sunderland have announced they are to release several out-of-contract players this summer, including experienced striker Andy Cole.

Stanislav Varga, Stephen Wright and Ian Harte will also be let go this summer after their existing deals at the club expire.

Another high-profile player who is out of contract this summer is 36-year-old Dwight Yorke.

The former Trinidad and Tobago international is yet to make a firm decision over whether to extend his playing career by another year, although he may be tempted to take up a coach or player-coaching role with the Black Cats next season.

Sunderland manager Roy Keane said: "We've spoken to the lads who are under contract until the end of the season and told them they won't be getting another one.

"I've had a chat with Yorkie and we are due another discussion next week, he has one or two options.

"It's not as if it has to be done this week – contracts don't expire until the end of June - but it's only fair to put the players in the picture.

"Every player has contributed, be it this season or last, and I want to put on record my thanks to them."

Several players also returned to the Stadium of Light this week after long-term loan deals with Championship clubs.

And while Graham Kavanagh, Greg Halford and Russell Anderson appeared to be surplus to requirements earlier in the season, Keane has revealed one or more of them may be given a chance to earn a place in his squad next season.

"They have all gone out and done themselves no harm, that shows a good side to them," said Keane.

"They are our players, they are back and we'll see how things pan out."
