Keane unfazed by lack of goals
06/09/2008
Republic of Ireland captain Robbie Keane insists he is not fazed by his lack of goals so far this season.
Keane has yet to hit the back of the net since his £20 million transfer from Tottenham Hotspur to Liverpool but says he is only concentrating on Ireland at the minute.
The Reds' forward was Spurs' top goalscorer last season with 23 in all competitions but having started two Champions League games and three more in the Premier League Keane is yet to open his account for his new employers.
The 28-year-old his country's record goalscorer and has netted on each of his last three appearances for Giovanni Trapattoni's side.
Despite his current goal drought at club level Keane is sure he will be able to maintain his form at international level.
Keane was asked if his current form worried him at all.
He said: "No, because I am playing for Ireland. As I have said before many times, I never worry about not scoring goals.
"I scored my last one for Ireland; I am with Ireland now, so as long as I do the business for Ireland, that's the most important thing at this present time."
Republic of Ireland start their World Cup qualifying campaign against Georgia. The match has been relocated to Germany because of the current troubles in the former Soviet republic.
Ireland are unbeaten under Trapattoni's leadership and Keane says the players are looking forward to the forthcoming campaign.
He said: "The spirit in the camp has always been great, but it always helps when you are doing well and you are winning games."
Italy and Bulgaria are likely to pose the biggest threat to Ireland's hopes of qualifying from Group eight.
