Kinnear agrees new monthly contract with Magpies
24/10/2008
Newcastle United interim manager Joe Kinnear has revealed he is on the verge of signing a new month-long contract at the club.
Owner Mike Ashley is continuing to negotiate with several parties about a potential takeover and until the club's ownership situation is resolved there is a reluctance to put a long-term management team in place.
"I will be signing a new contract, but it will only be for another month," said Kinnear.
"It's a monthly situation because I know they are in talks - with who I have no idea - but they are in talks [with other managers and investors].
"It is a rolling contract, one month after another month, and then I'll take it from there."
Kinnear endured a rocky start to life at St James' Park after facing criticism for giving the players the day off on his first Monday as manager.
And he responded to the media's questions with a foul-mouthed tirade that made all the headlines that week.
Since then, however, Kinnear appears to have improved the atmosphere in the dressing room, with Newcastle coming from behind to earn consecutive 2-2 draws against Everton and Manchester City.
"I love it. It's the best thing I have ever done - it really is," the former Wimbledon and Luton boss continued.
"I have tried on numerous occasions to get myself back in. All the interviews that I'd had, I had asked if I could just make a statement and have them to listen to what I had to say.
"But it was, 'How's your heart?', 'How's your medical situation?', so really, I was written off, to be honest.
"This is a fantastic opportunity for me to let everybody know I am back in the business."
However, Kinnear is under no illusion about how much chance he has of landing the job permanently.
"During the week, there were three or four managers mentioned [for the job]," he added.
"Gerard Houllier - there were so many, I lost count. Sven-Goran Eriksson was in there as well.
"But you never know what will happen to me if I do a good job here."
