Kinnear to remain with Magpies for another month

Joe Kinnear will continue as Newcastle United manager for at least another month after owner Mike Ashley confirmed his position following the 0-0 draw with Chelsea.

Kinnear said some weeks ago that he expected his involvement with the club to be verified after the game at Stamford Bridge and was duly given the go ahead having lifted the Magpies out of the relegation zone during his two months in charge.

The Newcastle boss said he would remain as the manager until the club was sold but that he had only been confirmed as manager for another month.

Kinnear said: "The deal was to be in charge until the club was sold and nothing has changed since then to be honest.

"But I have been informed that I am here for another month and that will bring us up to the transfer window. So if I can twist his [Ashley's] arm and get a few quid out of him, I can buy a couple of players."

Kinnear suggested that Ashley was close to agreeing a deal, with a number of consortiums showing interest in the club, and that the owner even turned down one bid as he did not feel it was high enough.

"Mike told me I would be here for another month on Friday," said Kinnear. "The club has not got a buyer yet but people are talking to them. So far, nobody has come up with the cash.

"Mike said they were Americans but the offer they made was well below his estimation of what the club was worth."

Kinnear has said he hopes to bring in at least four players in January and wants two defenders as soon as the transfer window opens.
