Late Aliadiere strike steals points for Boro against Wigan
04/10/2008
Jeremie Aliadiere has earned Middlesbrough their first away win of the year with a 1-0 win over Wigan at the JJB Stadium.
The hosts dominated the match but a resolute defensive display helped Boro steal all three points.
Aliadiere's strike came in the 89th minute and rounded-off a flowing passing move, with Mido's cross finding him in the box to volley home.
Earlier Amr Zaki had seen an excellent shot well saved by Boro goalkeeper Ross Turnbull and he also denied Emile Heskey with an equally fine stop.
Boro defender David Wheater did his best to limit the impact of Heskey and was especially effective in the second half in front of England boss Fabio Capello.
Although Aliadiere gained the headlines, the win was possibly most deserved by the Boro defence and goalkeeper.
Meanwhile, at the Hawthornes striker Roman Bednar was the hero for West Brom as they beat Fulham 1-0.
Bednar found the back of the net after the Cottagers failed to clear a corner properly, allowing Bednar was able to poke the ball home from close-range.
Jonathan Greening had been a creative force for the Baggies throughout the match and his cross almost helped Ryan Donk open the scoring midway through the second half, but Donk's header came back off the woodwork.
Donk also had a shot cleared off the line during a scramble as West Brom edged closer to finding the back of the net. They were finally rewarded when Bednar scored in the 61st minute.
Danny Murphy, Clint Dempsey and Seol Ki-Hyeon all went close for Fulham during the match but none of their shots found the target.
