Late penalty earns Stoke draw against Tigers

29/11/2008

Stoke earned a vital point at home to high-flying Hull City after coming back from a goal behind to salvage a 1-1 draw.

Marlon King had put the visitors in front on the stroke of half time but Ricardo Fuller equalised with a penalty late on.

The Potters had enjoyed the bulk of possession during the first half but had little to show for their efforts.

Boaz Myhill made two decent saves to deny Fuller and Mamade Sidibe so it was against the run of play when King put Hull in front.

Just before the break the Tigers launched the ball into the box. Michael Turner and Dean Marney both fought for the ball in the air before it fell to King who poked it home.

In the second half Stoke continued to push forward and had greater luck in breaking down Hull's defence than they had in the first half.

They also had Rory Delap's long throw in as a weapon which had been largely negated in the first 45 minutes.

Hull did this by sending substitute Dean Windass to warm up near him when he was about to throw the ball in. This worked well until the veteran striker was booked.

It was from one of these long throws that the Potters almost equalised. The ball found Fuller in the box but his header was saved by Myhill.

Delap himself almost converted Michael Tonge's cross but his finish went just wide.

Stoke were then handed a golden chance to equalise after Tigers goalkeeper Myhill brought down Ricardo Fuller who had beaten two defenders to a long ball.

Myhill was yellow carded but the penalty was enough of a punishment for the visitors. Fuller stepped up to take the spot kick himself and although Myhill got a touch to it the striker hit it well enough to find the back of the net.

Fuller had a brief chance to snatch a win with time running out but could not find enough power in his shot to beat Myhill for a second time.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18903861-ADNFCR
