Lee returns to Anfield as assistant manager

Liverpool have appointed former Bolton Wanderers boss Sammy Lee as Rafael Benitez's new assistant manager.

The 49-year-old former Reds midfielder will be Benitez's first genuine number two since Pako Ayesteran left last summer.

First-team coach Alex Miller, who had been filling in as the Spaniard's assistant, left the club last week to take over at Japanese side JEF United Ciba, leaving a vacancy in the backroom staff.

Merseyside native Lee played for Liverpool for a decade between 1976 and 1986, winning three league titles, four League Cups and two European Cups before moving to QPR.

He returned to Anfield as reserve-team manager under Graeme Souness in 1993, before being appointed to first-team coach by Gerard Houllier.

Lee later went on to work in the England national team set-up, before joining Bolton as number two to Sam Allardyce – who he succeeded as manager last summer.

However, Lee was given only six months in the top job at the Reebok Stadium as he was sacked by chairman Phil Gartside and replaced by Gary Megson.
