Madrid give up on ever signing Ronaldo
24/10/2008
Real Madrid have revealed they have ended their pursuit of ever signing Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Manchester United winger was linked with the Spanish champions last summer after admitting it would be a 'dream' to play at the Bernabeu.
United insisted the 23-year-old was not for sale and reported Madrid to Fifa after claiming they tried to unsettle the player.
Now Real president, Vicente Calderon, has admitted he has given up as a deal for the midfielder is not possible.
"Manchester decided they did not want to sell the player and we don't want to do anything against a friendly club like Manchester," Calderon said.
"We accept that Ronaldo decided to stay at Manchester. It is forgotten. Not only for January but, I think, for ever.
"Only if Manchester decided to sell will we be talking about it.
"But I would like to say clearly that Madrid is not doing anything to disturb a nice and friendly club like Manchester."
Ronaldo, who has scored three goals this season, has so far been overshadowed by United team-mates Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov since his return from injury.
The winger is expected to start in the Premier League champions' clash with Everton tomorrow at Goodison Park.
