Magpies swoop for Argentina winger Gutierrez
02/07/2008
Newcastle United manager Kevin Keegan has made Argentinean international winger Jonas Gutierrez his first signing of the summer.
The 24-year-old joins from Real Mallorca for an undisclosed fee, believed to be in the region of £5 million, and has signed a five-year contract at St James' Park.
Gutierrez is renowned in Spain for his flamboyant goal celebrations, which have earned him the nickname 'Spiderman' due to his penchant for wearing the superhero's mask after scoring.
And after signing a contract in the north-east, the right-sided midfielder said he is looking forward to playing in the Premier League.
"I cannot tell you how excited I am to be joining Newcastle United," he said.
"The Premier League is a great place to play and I cannot wait to meet my new team-mates and prove myself to the Newcastle United fans."
United boss Keegan added: "Jonas is a wonderful signing for us.
"I know a lot of other clubs have been interested in him. He'll be a terrific addition to the squad.
"He's an exciting player and I'm sure our fans will enjoy watching him."
