Major overhaul at Beckham's LA Galaxy
12/08/2008
David Beckham's side Los Angeles Galaxy have announced the resignation of coach Ruud Gullit and sacked general manager Alexi Lalas.
Gullit, who joined the Major League Soccer (MLS) outfit last November, has left for personal reasons, while Lalas has been fired as part of "sweeping changes" at the Home Depot Centre.
"It is an amicable arrangement and we appreciate and respect the issues that Ruud has highlighted with the club and are very grateful for all the hard work he has contributed while with the organisation," Timothy J Leiweke, the president of Galaxy's owners said.
"Hopefully, he has laid the foundations for future success for the Los Angeles Galaxy."
Gullit, 45, said his family had found it difficult to settle in California.
"I would like to thank the players and the fans for their fantastic support and I wish the LA Galaxy much success in the future," the Dutchman explained.
"I would now like to spend some time with my family before considering any other position in football."
Former USA star Cobi Jones will replace Gullit on an interim basis.
Lalas, who was instrumental in bringing Beckham to LA from Real Madrid last summer, was thanked for his hard work and dedication.
Galaxy have struggled in the MLS this season with just 23 points from 19 games, owing largely to their leaky defence.
