Man arrested after football fan killed in traffic accident
21/04/2008
A 20-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the death of a football fan following the West Midlands derby on Sunday.
West Midlands police were called following a road traffic collision on Aston Hall Road around 15:00 BST yesterday.
A 26-year-old pedestrian sustained fatal injuries after he was knocked down by a VW Golf.
He was pronounced dead at Birmingham's city hospital.
A West Midlands ambulance service spokesman said: ""Unfortunately despite the best efforts of ambulance crews, and then hospital staff nothing, could be done to save him and he was confirmed dead shortly after arrival at hospital,"
The incident took place near Aston Villa's football ground Villa Park shortly after Birmingham City lost 5-1 to their local rivals.
Police have issued a statement saying that the name of the victim is not being released at this time.
The 20-year-old man was arrested in suspicion of murder and is continuing to help police with their enquiries.
Reports claim that both men were Aston Villa fans.
