Maradona wins first game in charge against Scotland

19/11/2008

Diego Maradona has won his first game as manager of Argentina after Maxi Rodriguez fired his side to a 1-0 win over Scotland at Hampden Park.

Argentina were in the ascendancy for most of the match but Scotland did create a couple of chances for James McFadden but he could not fins a way past goalkeeper Juan Pablo Carrizo.

Maradona's side were fired up at the start of the match, keen to impress their new boss, and put Scotland under instant pressure.

Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano unleashed a rare shot that troubled Allan McGregor as it dipped and swerved but the Rangers keeper managed to keep it out.

However, eight minutes in Argentina strung together a flowing passing move that ultimately ended in the only goal of the game.

Carlos Tevez linked up with Newcastle United winger Jonas Gutierrez down the right flank. Gutierrez then laid the ball into the path of Rodriguez who slid the ball under McGregor.

Argentina were threatening to run riot as Ezequiel Lavezzi and Tevez both went close for the visitors.

George Burley's side tried to respond and Kris Commons' cross found McFadden in the box but his shot was deflected over the bar.

At the start of the second half Paul Hartley gift wrapped a chance for Lavezzi when he lost possession deep in his own half but was relieved to see the Argentinean shoot wide.

Carrizo then made a good save to deny McFadden from close range. Commons' cross had got deflected and the Argentinean dived at the feet of the Birmingham striker as he looked to pounce from close-range.

Gabriel Heinze wasted a free-kick late on for Maradona's side and substitute German Denis' had a shot blocked.

However, Scotland rarely threatened in the closing stages allowing Maradona to begin his managerial reign on a winning note.

Scotland will hope to have better luck when they face Holland in their next World Cup qualifier in March.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18885514-ADNFCR
