Marseille fans charged by Uefa
28/11/2008
Uefa has confirmed Marseille will be summoned to answer charges relating to fans throwing missiles during the Champions League match against Liverpool earlier this week.
European football's governing body hinted earlier this week that an investigation would be launched into an incident at Anfield during the Reds' 1-0 win, which sealed their place in the last-16 and effectively knocked out the French club.
As he went across to take a corner in front of the visiting fans, Steven Gerrard appeared to be struck with a cigarette lighter thrown from the stands although he did not react at the time.
And after receiving the officials' reports on the game, Uefa confirmed on Friday that Marseille would be required to answer the charges in front of the control and disciplinary body on December 11th.
"An investigation has started into charges of Olympique de Marseille fans throwing missiles at the French club's group D match away to Liverpool FC at Anfield on Wednesday," a statement read.
In addition, Italian side AS Roma have been charged with misconduct after their fans were accused of setting off fireworks in the stands and obstructing exits in one section of the ground in their group match against Chelsea on November 4th.
Roma will be required to answer the charge at the same meeting on December 11th.
