McBride confirms he is to leave Fulham
28/05/2008
United States international Brian McBride has announced that he is to leave Fulham after four years at the West London club.
Since signing for the Craven Cottage side, the 35-year-old has made in excess of 150 appearances and managed to play a crucial role in the club's successful battle against relegation after recovering from a serious injury picked up at the start of last season.
In total, the striker hit the net 40 times for Fulham and manager Roy Hodgson has stated that he would have liked McBride to have stayed on for another season, though he respects the player's desire to move on.
Speaking to Fulham's official website, the American said: "After much consideration with my family, we have decided to leave Fulham after four and a half fantastic years.
"I have always stated my intention to return to America at some stage and this seems like the right moment in my career to move on.
"I take great pride in the fact that my last appearance for Fulham saw the club maintain its Premier League status.
"I leave with some wonderful memories from my time at Fulham and the club will always be in my heart."
After their narrow escape from relegation, coach Ray Lewington stated his belief that the return of McBride as well as fans' favourite Jimmy Bullard was crucial in the club holding on to their Premier League status.
