Mourinho 'should have quit Chelsea at Wembley'
29/08/2008
Jose Mourinho has revealed he counts not quitting Chelsea after the 2007 FA Cup final as the greatest regret of his career.
The Portuguese left Stamford Bridge by mutual consent just one month into the 2007-08 Premier League season to be replaced by Avram Grant.
Mourinho, now at Inter Milan, said he had been approached by an unnamed club the day after he led the Blues to FA Cup glory against Manchester United.
"If there is a moment in my career where I regret a decision, it was clearly the day after the FA Cup final - when my agent told me 'club X' want you tomorrow and I told him no, I love it here and I don't want to go, I want to stay," Mourinho told Ford's feelfootball.com.
"That's the moment I regret," Mourinho continued.
"After that day, after that final, I should [have left] Chelsea and I would have the chance in Wembley to say goodbye to the fans and to say goodbye to English football.
"So that's a moment I regret because the next season lasted only a couple of months."
Mourinho's Inter Milan have been drawn against Werder Bremen, Panathinaikos and Anorthosis Famagusta in group B of the Champions League, with a Stamford Bridge reunion on the cards should the Nerazzuri be drawn against Chelsea in the knockout stages.
