Mutu told to compensate Chelsea for failing drugs test
06/06/2008
Romania star Adrian Mutu has been ordered to pay Chelsea £9.6 million in compensation for testing positive for cocaine.
Mutu was sacked by the Blues in October 2004 after failing a drugs test and was hit with a seven-month ban by Fifa.
Chelsea wanted £8 million in compensation, arguing the striker brought about his own downfall and wanted to recover the money they had lost on his transfer fee and wages.
Blues owner Roman Abramovich splashed out £16 million on the 29-year-old in 2003.
Cristian Sarbu, Mutu's lawyer, claims Fifa's decision was not final and that Mutu would contest the ruling.
"This is a decision taken by a sporting tribunal. After this is final, this can be taken to a civil court," Sarbu said.
Neither Fifa nor Chelsea have yet to confirm Sarbu's claims.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled last May the world football body would decide Mutu's fine.
After being sacked by Chelsea, Mutu rebuilt his career at Juventus. after being signed on a free transfer.
Mutu was then signed by Fiorentina in 2006, and has bagged 33 goals in 62 appearances.
The striker is expected to start in Romania's clash with France on Monday in their Euro 2008 opener.
