Newcastle midfielder Barton jailed for six months

Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton has been handed a six-month jail sentence after pleading guilty to assault and affray.

Barton, 25, admitted the charges last month in relation to an incident in Liverpool city centre last year.

The England international footballer was arrested by Merseyside police over a confrontation outside a McDonald's restaurant in the early hours of December 27th 2007 following a Boxing Day night out in the city.

The former Manchester City player, of Foxbank Close, Widnes, was taken into custody along with his brother Andrew, 19, also from Cheshire, and Nadine Wilson, 27, from Childwall, Liverpool.

Andrew Barton and Ms Wilson were arrested on charges of assault.

Reporting restrictions imposed by Liverpool crown court had prevented the publication of any details prior to today's sentencing.

Shortly after the sentence was handed down, Barton's club released the following statement: "Newcastle United notes the sentence passed to Joey Barton at Liverpool crown court today.

"The club is considering the verdict and will be making no further comment at this moment."
