O'Sullivan gets maximum in beating Williams
28/04/2008
Ronnie O'Sullivan scored his ninth competitive maximum break to dispatch former champion Mark Williams in the second round of the World Championships.
The Rocket was flawless in the final frame as he compiled one of the greatest breaks of all time to seal a 13-7 win over the Welshman.
O'Sullivan looked invincible as he eased through the 20th frame with consummate ease, taking 15 reds and 15 blacks before clearing the colours without ever running into trouble.
The break secured O'Sullivan £147,000 in prize money, with an additional £10,000 for making the highest break of the tournament.
Williams has won at the Crucible twice before - in 2000 and 2003 - while O'Sullivan also has two titles to his name - having been crowned champion in 2001 and 2004.
But it was the Londoner who looked more like the former winner as he rattled through all four frames of today's afternoon session, having gone in overnight with a 9-7 lead.
Williams' defeat in the second round means he will now drop out of the world's top 16 next year and will therefore have to qualify for future tournaments until he regains his ranking.
