Outsider Kingsgate Native claims Golden Jubilee Stakes win
21/06/2008
Kingsgate Native defied the odds to claim a famous win in the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot today.
The 33-1 outsider trailed favourite Takeover Target and Fatboy for much of the race before making his move towards the end as he sprinted away to win.
Fatboy fell-away with two lengths to go while Takeover Target tired badly as the end was in sight, which allowed War Artist to take second position and Sir Gerry finished third.
"He was a bit keen early and it just took me a while to get him into his rhythm and settle him," said Kingsgate Native's jockey Seb Sanders.
"He carried me very easily to the two-pole and it was just a case of getting past those hardened horses in front.
"He knuckled down and picked up really well, he's given me a terrific ride throughout. He's going to be a star sprinter for a while."
Elsewhere, trainer Aidan O'Brien and jockey Johnny Murtagh's fantastic festival continued as their horse Macarthur won the Hardwicke Stakes which was the pair's fifth win at Royal Ascot this year.
The Queen also had a good day as she celebrated her 20th Royal Ascot winner during her reign and her first since 1999 as her horse Free Agent won the Chesham Stakes.
