Oxford sack manager Patterson

01/12/2008

Blue Square Premier club Oxford United have sacked Darren Patterson after a poor start to the season which sees them languishing in 17th position.

Patterson has been under pressure for some time due to a disappointing run - with the team managing only seven wins from their opening 20 league games, only one of which has been away from home, and being knocked out of the Setanta Shield and the FA Cup.

Following the manager's departure former boss Jim Smith has been appointed in a caretaker capacity while the board conducts its search for a new permanent chief.

"Oxford United announce that they have parted company with manager Darren Patterson after a meeting with chairman Kelvin Thomas today," a statement from the Conference club reads.

Jim Smith will step in as caretaker manager in the short-term alongside first-team coach Mickey Lewis.

"The pair will take training tomorrow and be in charge of the side at Mansfield on Thursday. A full application and interview process will be conducted to find a permanent manager."

In announcing the decision, Thomas described Patterson as "a very honest, hard-working young manager who has given everything he had to the role".

"However, we feel that a change of manager and a change of direction is needed at this time," he added.

"We thank Darren for his efforts and wish him well for the future."ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18904757-ADNFCR
