Parry rules out ground share with Toffees
05/10/2008
Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry has ruled out the possibility of a ground share with rivals Everton despite delays to their proposed new stadium.
The Reds have been looking to build a new ground for some years to try and match the capacities of the likes of Old Trafford and the Emirates Stadium.
However, the current world financial turmoil has affected their plans and Parry says the new stadium will be delayed due to the problems of borrowing large sums of money at present.
Everton are looking for a new home as well but Parry says the two clubs will never ground share.
The Toffees' proposed new stadium would be on the outskirts of the city in Kirby, while the Reds are trying to build elsewhere on Stanley Park.
Liverpool had hoped to get work under way on the £350 million development at the start of 2009 but may now face further delays.
He told BBC Five Live's Sportsweek programme: "A ground share is not being considered. With the financial markets in the turmoil as they are, any major construction project at this time is difficult, it is risky.
"It is a case of a delay while things settle down, it is still a very, very good long term project. The economics of it still make underlying sense."
Parry added: "I do not see any change in direction or any change in plans, and ground share is not back on the agenda."
Parry also said he and American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett were pleased that speculation of a takeover of the club had died down recently.
"It has gone quiet and everyone is delighted. The focus at Liverpool should only ever be on football," said Parry.
