Pearce hails U21s' team spirit

Manager Stuart Pearce has praised the "team spirit" of his England under-21 side after they sealed a place at Euro 2009 with an aggregate victory over Wales.

Going into the match 3-2 up after the first leg last week, England were pegged back to 2-2 on the night after taking an early lead.

And Pearce's men were left hanging on at the end when Tottenham midfielder Tom Huddlestone was sent off midway through the second half.

However, a battling and hard-working performance ensured Wales failed to get the breakthrough they needed to level the aggregate scores - meaning England qualify for next summer's finals at their neighbours expense.

"We went down to ten men but my players stood shoulder to shoulder and said 'we're not going to concede a goal," Pearce said afterwards.

"And from the time Tom went off, Wales were probably less of a threat than they were beforehand.

"So credit to us - there is a great team spirit in the camp and it is an absolute honour to work with these players."

Pearce also paid a glowing tribute to Wales, who he claims were as good a side as England have played under his management.

"It is a real shame the pair of us are not going to Sweden because we could have done the British Isles proud," he continued.

"It was as stern a test as we have had in my time as manager.

"We have been pushed hard by Spain, Italy and Holland but Wales were right up there.

"I am just glad to get through but it is a shame we could not both qualify."
