Petrov ruled out until next year
22/10/2008
Manchester City winger Martin Petrov has been ruled out for up to four months after being diagnosed with damage to the cartilage in his right knee.
The Bulgarian, who was only just returning from a long injury layoff, picked up the problem on international duty last week.
And while City manager Mark Hughes revealed the injury was not as bad as first feared, he had failed to avoid another significant rehabilitation.
"It not his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) this time but he's got a tear in his meniscus [knee cartilage] that will need to be repaired," Hughes said.
"Although it's good news about the ACL it's still a bad injury and he will be out for three or four months."
There was better news regarding full-back Micah Richards, however.
The England hopeful was substituted during Monday's 2-2 draw at Newcastle United, and it was feared he may have sustained a fractured ankle.
Scans have revealed there is no bone break, although he has still strained ligaments in the joint and will be out for "a period of time" the club said.
