Primus joins Charlton on three-month loan
28/08/2008
Portsmouth defender Linvoy Primus has joined Championship side Charlton Athletic on a three-month loan deal.
The 34-year-old has finally agreed a move to the Valley, which is close to his family in south-east London.
Reports in the media over the last few days suggested Primus was initially set to join the Addicks on a season-long loan, before Pompey manager Harry Redknapp pulled the plug on the deal.
However, it has been confirmed today that Primus' move is only a short-term arrangement and has been ratified in order to give the veteran the opportunity to build up his match fitness in the second tier of English football before returning to Fratton Park to fight for his first-team place.
He said: "It's good. I have a connection to Charlton and I'm also going to be close to my family.
"And it's a great opportunity for me to play football at a high standard, with a club who have ambitions and are moving forward.
"Initially it was a little bit out of the blue when I was asked if I would consider going out on loan. I thought about it for a little while, but the answer had to be yes, really.
"It's a chance for me to get fit match fit, that is and to play regular football, which I need to do."
Primus was also keen to dispel the myth that his move to Charlton was an indication that his top-flight career with Portsmouth is nearing an end.
"There was some confusion over the length of the loan, but it is for three months," he confirmed.
"I'm looking forward to it. It's an opportunity for me to get back to match fitness and to play regular football.
"I expect to be back in three months time to challenge for a place in the Pompey team, which is what I want."
Primus will link up with former manager Alan Pardew from his days with Barnet and Reading, as well as a stint at Charlton earlier in his career.
