Pulis slams Rams penalty winner
03/12/2008
Stoke City manager Tony Pulis has claimed the handball decision that led to Derby County's penalty winner in last night's Carling Cup quarter-final was incorrect.
Potters defender Andy Griffin was adjudged to have handled inside the area in injury time, giving Nathan Ellington the chance to claim the only goal of the game at the Britannia Stadium.
But Pulis, whose side were denied a goal from Richard Cresswell earlier in the game for a similar infringement, was incredulous at official Rob Styles.
"The referee was only a few yards from that and the ball hit Richard in the stomach," Pulis said of the earlier decision.
"Then he gives a penalty looking through a crowd of about 20 players, with the linesman not making a move.
"But I am not going to slaughter the referee, he just made a couple of mistakes.
"The ball hit Andy's hand, but how much intent there was I don't really know."
The victory for Championship side Derby puts them into the semi-finals of the competition, which could feature three teams from outside the top flight if Watford can beat holders Tottenham Hotspur in tonight's quarter-final.
