Reading to play Dagenham in Carling Cup

13/06/2008

Reading have been brought back down to earth with a bump following their relegation from the Premier League at the end of last season with a Carling Cup first-round tie at Dagenham & Redbridge.

The Royals were ousted from the top flight on the final day of the 2007/08 season and one of their first tasks as a Championship club will be to avoid an upset at Victoria Road against the League Two side.

Derby County, who finished bottom of the Premier League last season with a record-low number of points, have been given a home tie against another League Two outfit Lincoln City.

And the final former top-flight club, Birmingham City, will face Wycombe Wanderers in the first round.

Newly-promoted Aldershot, who won the Blue Square Premier last season, will play their first-ever Carling Cup fixture against Coventry City at the Ricoh Arena.

And Exeter City, who beat Cambridge United in the playoff final to rejoin the Football League, have been rewarded with a home tie against another of the competition's bigger clubs, Southampton.

Other notable ties thrown up by the draw include a Yorkshire derby between Huddersfield Town and Bradford City at the Galpharm Stadium; League Two minnows Morecambe travel to Nottingham Forest's City Ground; and the Championship playoff losing finalists Bristol City will host Darren Ferguson's Peterborough United, who last season won promotion to League One.
