Ronaldo "going nowhere", claims United chief Gill

20/05/2008

Manchester United chief executive David Gill has categorically stated that star winger Cristiano Ronaldo's future remains firmly at Old Trafford.

Responding to press speculation that Real Madrid are lining up an audacious £100 million bid this summer, Gill said the Portuguese international winger "is going nowhere" and would be a United player "for years to come".

"Without doubt we are [confident he will stay]," Gill told BBC Radio Five Live.

"He's got four more years on his contract with us until 2012. He's been with us for five years and we hope, and we are sure, he will be with us for years to come.

"He is clearly one of the best, if not the best, in the world. But he's at a great club that is winning trophies. He enjoys it immensely here.

"I can tell that from speaking to him privately and you can see he has a great relationship with the staff and the players."

United and Ronaldo are currently in Russia ahead of tomorrow night's Champions League final against Chelsea at the Luzhniki Stadium.

And Gill claims that to keep a club of this stature at the top of its field and regularly competing for major trophies "is not a club that sells its main assets".

"We have no intention of letting him go and we will make sure he is very happy here, as we do with all our top players," the chief executive added.

"We want a successful team on the pitch and you don't achieve that by selling Cristiano Ronaldo. He is going nowhere."ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18601037-ADNFCR
