Schmeichel could leave City in search of first-team chance
16/04/2008
Manchester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel could leave the club in search of first-team opportunities this summer.
The Danish stopper says he is eager to stay with the club but only if he gets the chance to start.
However, with Joe Hart having impressed for Sven-Goran Eriksson's side this season it appears Schmeichel may have to move elsewhere for the opportunity he craves.
The 21-year-old began the season as first-choice keeper, having enjoyed some good performances the previous season. However, he was sent on loan to Cardiff in October and is currently with Coventry City.
"I spoke to Sven last week and explained to him that I want to play first-team football," explained Schmeichel.
"He said that he can't promise me that, so if I am honest it looks like my future might not be at City."
Schmeichel, son of Manchester United legend Peter, said he would be willing to travel anywhere in Europe if there was a team willing to give him the chance to prove himself.
He said: "The future is exciting. I could go anywhere in Europe to play my football: Spain, Italy or stay here in England.
"I am looking forward to it but for now I am not thinking about that. I am a Coventry player at the moment and my job is to help Coventry to be safe [from relegation]."
Schmeichel has made six appearances for the Sky Blues since he joined them in March while he has played just seven times since Eriksson took over at City.
