Scolari bemoans Chelsea's ongoing penalty woe

13/11/2008

Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari was left to rue more penalty misery for his side after they were knocked out of the Carling Cup by Championship side Burnley.

After squandering several chances to finish the game within 90 minutes, the Blues were taken to extra time by the Clarets after veteran striker Ade Akinbiyi equalised in the 70th minute at Stamford Bridge.

And after being forced into a penalty shootout by the visitors, Wayne Bridge and John Obi Mikel saw their kicks saved as the underdogs produced the shock of the round by knocking out last season's runners-up.

The defeat in the spot-kick competition is Chelsea's second in the last seven months following their heartbreaking loss to Manchester United in the Champions League final in May.

Chelsea were also knocked out of the League Cup on penalties by Charlton Athletic in the 2006/07 season under Jose Mourinho.

And Scolari, who took over from the Portuguese's predecessor Avram Grant in the summer, said he hopes for a change of fortune in the future.

"They had more quality in the penalties than us," the Brazilian admitted.

"We practice penalties but in training it's different to when we play and we need to win one sometime."

Referring to the match itself, Scolari said he thought his side should have wrapped up the win before Burnley's second-half equaliser.

"Burnley played very well and we missed many chances in the game," he continued.

"We only scored one goal and had five or six chances to score a second but we made mistakes. With one chance they did that."ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18874465-ADNFCR
