Scotland confirm talks over co-hosting Euro 2016
03/12/2008
The Scottish Football Association (SFA) has confirmed it is in "tentative" talks with two other home nations over a prospective bid to host Euro 2016.
The SFA has told the Press Association news agency it is negotiating with the respective governing bodies of Wales and Northern Ireland in attempt to present a realistic bid package to Uefa.
Scotland's hopes of hosting the tournament on its own were dashed when European football's authorities voted in favour of an expanded tournament from 2016 onwards that would feature 24 teams rather than 16 to reflect the growing number of representative nations within Uefa.
However, despite not possessing the infrastructure to host a larger event, the SFA has apparently not given up hope of winning the rights to the European Championships in eight years' time.
PA quotes Uefa general secretary David Taylor - who is a Scottish native as telling the Herald newspaper: "It would be terrific. But I must be careful here.
"My enthusiasm for and advice to any country could be perceived in the wrong way. Many countries in Uefa are capable of hosting the tournament."
