Shearer turns down coaching role at Magpies
29/11/2008
Newcastle United manager Joe Kinnear has revealed that former player Alan Shearer has turned down a part-time coaching role with the club.
Kinnear said he had offered Shearer the chance to work with the Magpies' strikers, to give the squad a bit of a lift and to help the current television pundit get some coaching experience in case he wants to move into management.
However, the Geordie legend declined the offer and Kinnear says he will now look to someone else to fill that role for the Magpies.
Kinnear told the Guardian: "I said he'd be welcome to come in any time, to give the place a lift and work with our strikers.
"He said it was a very kind offer but he wasn't ready for it yet, and I said 'that's fine'. There's a possibility I might bring someone else in on the coaching front now."
Newcastle are not the only side looking to bring back former players. When Harry Redknapp took charge of Tottenham Hotspur recently he drafted in Tim Sherwood and Les Ferdinand to work with some of his players on a part-time basis.
Although Shearer turned down Kinnear's offer the Newcastle manager says relations between them remain good and that the door will always remain open to the former England striker.
Kinnear said: "It was very honourable of Alan. Speculation linking him with the job is never going to go away and we're both aware of that. I told him he's more than welcome here and there's not a problem, there's no aggravation between us."
Newcastle have not been prolific in front of goal this season, scoring just 17 goals in 14 league games thus far, form has seen them slip into the relegation zone on 14 points.
